Reader's view: Don't deprive girls of an education
People say men and women are created equal in this world. If this is true, why are 65 million women being deprived of a basic education everyday, according to UNESCO, or the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization? Women and men are no different. One does not deserve more education or higher pay than the other. But this happens every day, nonetheless.
Yes, some men are deprived of an education, too, but 1 million more girls than boys are uneducated, according to UNESCO. How is this fair? We girls are no less. We are not less worthy of an education. Yet this happens.
We as women and we as people need to take a stand against this tragedy.
If all women had a primary education, there would be 15 percent fewer child deaths. If all women had a primary education, 1.7 million children would be saved from malnutrition. Aren't these lives worth a stand? Aren't these lives worth speaking out for?
There is no reason 66 percent of the world's illiterate people should be women.
So we as people and women of the world need to stand up, speak out, and make a change in this world for the better.
