Reader's view: With Kennedy, council can reflect community
There are two candidates running for Duluth City Council I am especially passionate about.
First, obviously, is my husband, Joel Sipress, who is running for re-election in the 2nd District and has been an honest, thoughtful, and, above all, accessible advocate not just for the district we have lived in for almost 25 years but for the entire city.
I am also excited about Janet Kennedy, who is running for an At Large seat. I've known Kennedy for many years through her extensive community involvement; she would be an excellent addition to the City Council.
While Kennedy lives in West Duluth, through her service on a number of city-wide commissions, she understands Duluth in its entirety. And, as an African-American woman, she would provide an important perspective in a city that has always struggled with issues concerning race.
I work in the book-publishing industry. Publishers finally are committing to publishing books, especially for children, with characters reflecting our increasingly multicultural society. Just as it's important to have fictional characters reflecting a book's real readers, it's essential to have a city's leaders reflect its demographics.
Please join me in voting for Janet Kennedy on Nov. 7.
