Reader's view: 'Pocahontas' provides accurate look at history
I am pleased to be able to encourage people to see and hear the opera, "Pocahontas," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Marshall School auditorium (call 728-8949 for tickets).
The composer, Linda Tutas Haugen, has created a piece second to none. In addition to outstanding music, she has developed a surprisingly accurate historical framework by working with historians and consulting with state of Virginia Native Americans. In each community where "Pocahontas" is presented, local Native Americans are incorporated into the effort as musicians and other helpful assistants, which is the case here in Duluth.
This is an important effort in providing us with a positive and accurate picture of an area of Native American culture and history.
