David Lloyd Allen

David Lloyd Allen, 81, passed away on Monday, October 1, 2018. Born in 1936 in Cleveland, Ohio, he grew up in Evanston, Illinois. After graduating from Evanston Township High School, he attended the University of Missouri-Columbia where he received his BA in English. David went on to do graduate work in English at the same institution, receiving his MA and completing all but his PhD dissertation. It was at the University of Missouri that he discovered his passion - teaching. David became a college instructor, teaching at UM-Columbia, and was part of the core faculty who built the English department at the new UM Campus in St. Louis (UMSL), where he later served as Assistant Dean of Students for the College of Arts and Sciences. After a self-described, decade-long "geographical tour," David arrived in Minnesota where, in the mid-1980s, he joined the English faculty at Mesabi Range Community and Technical College. He was a valued member of the faculty there for two decades. He also served multiple terms as president of the Mesabi Range College Foundation. For many years, he was an active part of the community at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Virginia, where he served, for a time, as Senior Warden. After retiring from Mesabi Range, David enjoyed nothing more than reading, traveling, sharing long conversations with friends, and enjoying the company of his cat, Chaplin. A deeply intelligent, dignified, committed teacher with a keen sense of humor, David instilled in many a passion for literature and writing. He was an unwavering, generous friend and mentor to the many who knew him. He has enriched our lives beyond measure, and we will miss him deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, Miron Allen and Blanche (Birdsong) Allen. He is survived by those of us privileged to have called him our friend. At David's request, no memorial service will be held.
