Body part found in Mississippi River in southeastern Minnesota

WEST NEWTON, Minn. -- A human leg was found by a resident on the Mississippi River in West Newton on July 14, according to a news release from the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office.

The resident was cleaning out a debris pile 20 feet from the shore when the person spotted a shoe and a human leg, femur down to foot, in the pile of debris.

There were no other human remains located at that time.

West Newton is about 40 miles southeast of Red Wing.

The incident is under investigation and more information will follow pending a report from the Medical Examiner’s office.
