Lightning hits campers on Madeline Island
Three people were injured, one seriously, when lightning struck in the vicinity of a campsite on Madeline Island early on Saturday.
The La Pointe Police Department reported a female called Ashland County dispatchers from the ferry dock on the island about 5:30 a.m. to say she had been struck by lightning.
When an officer arrived, he learned the female had been tent camping in Big Bay Town Park and had been getting into her vehicle when the lightning struck and threw her to the ground.
The officer checked the campsite and found two more victims in a tent next to the vehicle. One, a 23-year-old man from the Twin Cities, had burns all over his body. The other male in the tent traveled on his own to Memorial Medical Center in Ashland to be medically cleared.
Police did not release the names of the victims or the condition of the badly burned man.
Police said it was discovered that lightning had struck a tree close to the campsite and followed the root system through the tent and to the vehicle.
In addition to La Pointe police, Madeline Island Ambulance, the Ashland Paramedic Intercept Unit, the Bayfield Fire Department and LifeLink medical helicopter service responded to the call.
