'They ate his body, nearly all of it': Suspected poacher mauled to death, eaten by pride of lions
SOUTH AFRICA - A recent incident in South Africa resulted in the hunter being the hunted.
A suspected poacher was mauled to death and eaten by a pride of lions near Kruger National Park in South Africa, according to police, adding that little was left of the victim's body.
"It seems the victim was poaching in the game park when he was attacked and killed by lions," police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe told AFP, a French international news outlet.
The victim's remains were found over the weekend in the bush of a private game park near the northern province of Limpopo, where animals have been poached in increasing numbers over recent years.
"They ate his body, nearly all of it, and just left his head and some remains," said Ngoepe.
A loaded hunting rifle was found near the body Saturday morning, Feb. 10, according to an AFP report. Police are still trying to establish the identity of the victim.
Last year, several lions were found poisoned near a farm in the same province with their heads and paws sawn off.
Lion body parts are often used in traditional medicine.
