County pledges $15,000 to Miracle League field in Hibbing

The St. Louis County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday pledged $15,000 toward construction of a baseball field that will be accessible for players of all capabilities.

The field, to be located in Hibbing, is being sponsored by the miracle League of the Iron Range and will provide opportunities for children with disabilities to play Miracle League baseball regardless of their abilities.

The county money will help draw $50,000 from the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, county officials said Tuesday.

In addition, the Minnesota Twins and the Pohlad Family, which owns the team, recently donated $200,000 to the Miracle League of The Iron Range as part of the 2014 Minneapolis All-Star Community Legacy effort.

In conjunction with the Hibbing Parks and Recreation Department, the Hibbing Little League program, and various community members, the Miracle League of the Iron Range was formed to build a field in Bennett Park that is hoped to be ready by August, 2015.

The $400,000 will provide the field, surface and base, fencing, dugout, and engineering requirements.

The county board will formally approve the $15,000 allocation at a June board meeting. The board made its pledge at its regular meeting Tuesday in Hibbing.
