St. Louis County Board approves Arrowhead Road project
St. Louis County commissioners on Tuesday approved a plan to resurface and upgrade a busy part of Arrowhead Road in Duluth, from Rice Lake Road west to near Haines Road.
The project will overlay the old highway surface, which is 19 years old, said Jim Foldesi, the county’s director of public works.
The job also includes widening the roadway a bit to add a center turning lane for much of the distance — from west of Rice Lake Road to Swan Lake Road. That will provide safe turning space, especially for eastbound vehicles going into churches and offices along Arrowhead Road.
“There have been a number of rear-end accidents because of a slight hill and sight distance issues,’’ Foldesi said, noting the road will be widened to the north to provide the extra room necessary for the turn lane.
The $1.4 million project is slated for the upcoming 2018 construction season. Northland Constructors of Duluth was the winning bidder. The money will come from county state aid highway funds.
