Reinert out, Kalin in for Minnesota secretary of state race

Former Minnesota Rep. Jeremy Kalin said Tuesday he's entering the race for secretary of state, the third DFLer to jump into the 2014 race.

Two other DFLers, state Rep. Debra Hilstrom and veteran elections administrator Rachel Larson Bohman, also are running.

Meanwhile, state Sen. Roger Reinert, DFL-Duluth, ended speculation that he might seek the statewide position.

"Count me out for SecState," Reinert tweeted Tuesday morning. "Still loving my classroom and Capitol work, and not looking for a reason to leave Duluth."

No Republicans have formally announced their intentions but several have expressed interest in seeking the job as the state's top elections official.

Two-term Secretary of State Mark Ritchie is stepping down when his term expires at the end of 2014.

Kalin served in the Minnesota House for two terms, leaving after the 2010 election to become an energy consultant. He represented a Chisago County district north of the Twin Cities, but now he lives in Minneapolis with his wife and two young children.
