Piedmont church struck by lightning
Christ Lutheran Church in the Piedmont Heights neighborhood was struck by lightning early Thursday morning.
At 5:34 a.m. the Duluth Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 2415 Ensign St. Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire around a cross cupola structure on the roof of the church, authorities said.
According to the fire department, the fire extended into the roof area but was very quickly contained and stopped. Initial damage estimates were $50,000 for the structure and $25,000 for contents as there is water and smoke damage to the interior of the church.
The Duluth Fire Marshal's Office investigation as to the origin and cause of the fire resulted in the belief that a lightning strike to the church started the fire, according to authorities.
Assisting at the scene included Duluth Heights, Lincoln Park, West Duluth and headquarters stations as well as Duluth Police Department. No injuries were reported.
