Floodwaters wash out part of Mesabi Trail
Part of the Mesabi Trail washed out and authorities are urging caution on Embarrass Lake near Biwabik after some type of dam — possibly a beaver dam — gave way on Friday afternoon.
The apparent collapse at about 3 p.m. Friday sent water rushing from a 20-acre lake located just upstream from Embarrass Lake, according to the Gilbert Police Department that serves Biwabik.
The water washed out part of the Mesabi Trail near Biwabik and filled Embarrass Lake with red sediment. Police are urging caution if people are on the lake this weekend because the influx of water has affected ice conditions. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency are aware of the situation and are expected to assess the scene, according to police.
When the dam broke, the rushing water exposed some culverts, but city infrastructure was intact and the incident hadn’t affected water and sewer service in the area, police said.
