Woman found dead in vehicle submerged in Island Lake
A Fredenberg Township woman died Friday after apparently missing a curve in foggy conditions and driving into Island Lake north of Duluth.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported that the vehicle of Darlene Lukovsky, who would have turned 80 on Sunday, was found early Saturday, submerged in the lake off Bear Island Road.
She had been reported missing by family members on Friday evening. They said she had spoken to family members by phone at about 1:30 p.m. Friday, saying she was driving home from getting groceries in Duluth, but never returned home.
Family members, sheriff’s deputies and St. Louis County Rescue Squad members started searching along likely routes Lukovsky would have traveled, believing she may have lost her way in the thick fog that blanketed parts of the region on Friday.
Lukovsky’s Honda CR-V was found in Island Lake early Saturday morning.
“It appears (she) missed a curve in the road, possibly due to the foggy conditions, and drove into the water,” the Sheriff’s Office reported in a news release.
Her body was recovered from the water, and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
Efforts to remove the vehicle from the water will continue this weekend. The incident remains under investigation.
