Man seriously hurt in St. Louis County ATV crash

A Cotton man was seriously injured in an ATV rollover crash in Alborn Township on Saturday.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reported that emergency crews were called to the vicinity of County Highway 47 and West Shipley Road, about 25 miles northwest of Duluth, at about 2:45 p.m. Saturday on a report of an ATV crash along a trail “in a remote area.”

EMS personnel were able to reach the ATV operator, 21-year-old Dakota Voight, and bring him out on another ATV. He was airlifted to St. Luke’s hospital with what the Sheriff’s Office said were serious injuries; he was reported to be in stable condition Saturday evening.

“Voight had been riding on a trail when he attempted to climb a steep hill, causing the ATV to roll over,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

Voight was not wearing a helmet and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

The St. Louis County Rescue Squad, Alborn Fire Department, Meadowlands Ambulance and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources also responded to the scene.
