Ashland man drowns in Chequamegon Bay
A 55-year-old Ashland man drowned in the water of Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior near Kreher Park in the Wisconsin city, the Ashland County Sheriff's Office reported Monday.
Ronald Werchowski was overdue in returning from walking his dog, and a caller on Saturday evening reported finding personal effects belonging to Werchowski at the park in addition to several holes in the ice near the shore.
Ashland County Sheriff's deputies, Ashland police officers and the Ashland Fire Department responded to the scene. The fire department conducted search operations and recovered a body from the water matching the description of Werchowski at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Authorities also found identification belonging to Werchowski.
According to initial information from the Ashland County Coroner, drowning appeared to be the cause of death. While no indication of foul play is suspected, the investigation remains active with the Ashland County Sheriff's Office and the Ashland County Coroner.
The Sheriff's Office reported that the dog made it home unharmed.
