Fire strikes Central Hillside duplex
Nobody was injured early Wednesday in a duplex fire in the Central Hillside neighborhood of Duluth.
Firefighters responded to 219 E. Third St., where they encountered heavy smoke coming from the rear of the first-floor duplex, a Duluth Fire Department news release said. Crews attacked the fire from the alley and quickly knocked down and contained it to the first floor, the news release said. Firefighters encountered minor hot spots inside the walls as they checked to see if the fire had extended.
One resident was home and evacuated prior to the arrival of firefighters, who responded at 1 a.m.
An upstairs unit was vacant and the other half of the duplex was not occupied at the time of the fire. No residents were allowed to remain in the residence. Initial damage estimates for structure and contents were listed at $25,000, the news release said. Investigators with the Duluth Fire Marshal's Office had not yet determined a cause of the fire.
