Ecumen campus goes smoke-free
The Ecumen Lakeshore retirement community in Duluth implemented a new smoke-free campus policy on Monday for residents, medical rehabilitation patients, staff members and visitors.
“It was time we put a policy like this into effect,” said Jena Evans, community relations manager at Ecumen, 4002 London Road. “It was a rewarding team effort and folks are very happy about the change.”
“Smoke in housing developments easily passes from one unit to another through walls, doors and shared ventilation systems. (A recently released Minnesota Department of Health) study shows that the percentage of residents reporting exposure to secondhand smoke a few times per month decreased from 44 percent to 23.6 percent after … properties went smoke-free,” Amy Westbrook, St. Louis County Public Health division director, said in a news release.
