Fire damages UMD Library Annex building
Firefighters made quick work of a fire Friday morning at the University of Minnesota Duluth Library Annex.
Flames and smoke met Duluth Fire Department crews responding to the building, located at 1314 Kirby Drive, at 5:55 a.m., the fire department reported in a news release.
It took about an hour to extinguish the fire.
The university reported that the fire “appears to be related to a monthly test of the generator on the roof. The stack/exhaust connected to the generator overheated and adjacent materials caught on fire.”
Damage was confined to the roof area, the fire department reported, save for a small amount of water damage to the interior of the structure as a result of the suppression effort.
Damages were estimated at $20,000, authorities said.
The Library Annex is located between the Kathryn A. Martin Library and Kirby Plaza buildings.
