* A $1.4 million remodeling program is planned for St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth to replace its adult intensive care unit and install what would be the area’s first neonatal intensive care unit.  

* Plans for expansion of the Mount Royal Shopping Center were revealed at a City Planning Commission meeting yesterday in City Hall. The plan calls for a new supermarket building near the existing post office and two smaller specialty shop buildings.

* Sportsman’s Headquarters, the last store in downtown Duluth catering to anglers and hunters, will close June 1. The store has operated at its present location at 17 W. Superior St. since the early 1980s as Sportsman’s Headquarters and earlier as Double Discount.

* Environmentalists are opposing a proposal to use sled dogs to haul motorboats across a half-mile portage in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The portage had been used by private trucks that carried motorboats into the BWCA.
