* A case of alleged sex discrimination in the Duluth Police Department will be heard by the Minnesota Human Rights Department on April 19 in City Hall. The state contends the department discriminates on the basis of sex in hiring and promoting.

* There will be more gasoline for Duluth motorists this month but pump prices will vary as much as 13 cents among stations. Four major oil companies — Standard, Shell, Phillips and Texaco — have increased their April allotments to Minnesota service stations.

* Fire early yesterday caused about $75,000 in damage to Mike’s Place, a Superior bar at 1709 N. Third St. Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire, which gutted the bar and damaged an upstairs apartment.

* Cold weather and predictions of bad fishing kept turnout low for yesterday’s opening day of the early steelhead season on the Brule River. Anglers who did turn out for the opener endured snow and temperatures in the 20s.
