100 CANDLES: Orpha Hartley
Orpha Hartley of Duluth celebrated her 100th birthday with her family at Mount Royal Pines in Duluth.
Orpha was born April 9, 1909, in Fargo, N.D., to Louise Ronice and Emil Christenson. She grew up in Fargo and married Howard Hartley in 1935 and they lived most of their life in Duluth. Howard, who passed away about 25 years ago, worked for Northern Pacific Railroad.
Orpha and Howard had two daughters: Jean (David) Munro of Bloomington, Ill., and West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Kathy (Tim) Fitzgerald of Lake Nebagamon. She has four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Until two years ago, Orpha spent her summers running the household at her cabin on Ottertail Lake, Minn., where many wonderful memories were made with friends and family. Some family members haven't missed but one summer in the past 40-50 years.
Orpha learned to drive at the young age of 74, is an avid University of Minnesota Duluth hockey fan and loves to play bridge. Her family writes, "She is an exceptional lady that her entire family admires and loves."
