Alice L. Burdick
Alice Burdick of Grand Rapids will celebrate her 103rd birthday with family and friends Jan. 22 at Sugar Brook Villa in Cohasset.
Alice was born Jan. 24, 1914, in Red Lake Falls, Minn., to Elise and Brede Bredeson. She grew up in Buxton, N.D.; Mandan, N.D.; and Deer River. She graduated from high school in 1933 in Deer River and was valedictorian of her high school class. After high school, she attended college at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.
Alice married Edward Burdick Nov. 29, 1941, in Grand Rapids. Edward joined the Navy in 1942, and Alice moved around a bit and ended up in Grand Rapids in 1943 where she continues to live. Alice worked for Bridgeman Russell in Grand Forks while attending college and then transferred to Thief River Falls, Minn. She also worked at Shaw Florist, Glen's Army Navy, Indian Joe's Wigwam and the Tree Farm in Grand Rapids.
Her children are Nona Nelson of Grand Rapids, Sandra Dee Borg of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and the late Marylou Mickle.
Alice is an avid reader. She also loves to knit, crochet, tat, embroider and continues to do so. She was an archer and loved to fish and hunt. Gardening was also something Alice loved to do. She always loved poetry and can still quote many poems. Alice is very spiritual and loves the Lord with all her heart. She attributes her longevity to "don't sweat the small stuff."
