Helen Marie (Praught) Nygard
Helen Nygard of Duluth will celebrate her 100th birthday with an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, in St. Andrews by the Lake Episcopal Church, 2802 Minnesota Ave., Duluth.
Helen was born Dec. 7, 1916, to Frank and Elsie (Van Volkenburg) Praught, in their home on Park Point. She was a graduate of Duluth Central High School and on June 25, 1938, she married Ernest Nygard. They lived on Park Point and ran a grocery store until 1954. They moved to Pike Lake and ran a grocery store on central hillside until 1974. When Ernest retired, they moved to an apartment above the 4th Street Market where Helen worked for her son, John, until 1980.
They became snowbirds when Helen retired and traveled to Fort Myers Beach in Florida until Ernest's death in 1990. Helen moved to Greysolon Plaza in 2006 where she lived until moving into assisted living last December following a fall.
Helen is a longtime member of St. Andrews by the Lake Episcopal Church. She has made many beautiful quilts and needle craft projects. Helen was a wonderful cook and hosted many family gatherings and was still baking pies, cookies and bars at the age of 98. She loved walking the beaches of Florida and still gets out with her walker when the weather cooperates. Helen enjoys listening to books on tape.
Her children are Nancy (deceased) and Richard Vanneste of Sebastian, Fla.; John and Annette Nygard of Venice, Fla., and Duquette, Minn.; Thomas (deceased) and Cynthia Nygard of Appleton, Wis.; and Steven and Debbie Nygard (both deceased).
