Helping Out for June 15, 2014


Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank relies on many volunteers to keep things at the food bank running smoothly. Call Lora Wedge at (218) 727-5653, ext. 108, or email for information.

Sanitize and keep it safe: Assist staff with stringent sanitation requirements. Sweep, dust, mop or sanitize the warehouse and clean room. This is a wonderful opportunity for small to large groups. Must be able to stand, lift, bend and follow warehouse safety procedures. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing.

Repack, sort and label food: Help sort and repack dry foods or perishables, or re-label cans. Must be able to stand, lift, bend and follow warehouse safety procedures and food sanitation practices. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Hair nets, gloves and other food-safe supplies will be provided when required.

Pack commodity food: Help prepare some of the more than 950 boxes of commodity food that are distributed to in-need mothers, children and seniors throughout the region as part of the Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors and Mother and Children programs. Must be able to stand, lift, bend and follow warehouse safety procedures. Evening hours are available.

  •  Docents and office support: Volunteers are needed to help at the North End Arts Gallery located in the Trade and Commerce building on Hammond Avenue and Broadway Street in Superior. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Saturday and Monday. Office support volunteers answer the telephone and help keep visitors from handling artwork. Volunteer orientation is provided.   • Readers: Volunteers age 55 and above are needed to read once a month to kids in head start in Superior/Douglas County.


Viewcrest Health Center seeks volunteers to run the on-site gift shop. Volunteers must be friendly and comfortable with handling money. Volunteers are needed to fill any two-hour time slots throughout the day on Saturdays and Sundays. Contact Denise at (218) 279-4210 for additional information.


Voyageurs National Park seeks volunteers for the following positions. Training is provided and positions with public contact are required to wear a uniform. The Rainy Lake Visitor Center seeks volunteers to meet visitors, provide information and assist with staffing the visitor center.

International Falls Headquarters seeks office volunteers to assist with data entry, information requests, brochure requests, updating website information, layout design and page development.

Jamey Malcomb

Jamey Malcomb started as a reporter for the Lake County News-Chronicle in August 2015. Malcomb is a native of North Carolina and holds a bachelor's degree in English and history from the George Washington University and a master's degree in education from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. Malcomb moved to Minnesota in July 2012 and previously worked as a sports clerk and news assistant at the Duluth News Tribune. He is the beat writer for the Lake County Board of Commissioners, Lake Superior School District board of education and high school sports in Lake County.
