Helping Out for April 13, 2014

COMMUNITY OFFENDER RE-ENTRY PROGRAM Soar Career Solutions seeks volunteer mentors for men and women coming out of incarceration and participating in the Community Offender Re-entry program.

Volunteers are asked to meet with a participant one hour a week to provide a meaningful friendship and guidance to ex-offenders. Training is provided. Monthly support and educational groups and/or social events are held for both mentors and mentees.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is recruiting volunteers 55 and older to fill the following positions. Call (218) 409-5991 for more information.

  • Bone Builders: Class leaders are needed for Bone Builders, a weight training program that prevents and reverses oste-oporosis by increasing muscular strength and bone density. Other benefits include improved balance, enhanced energy and well-being and increased opportunities for socialization. Bone Builders groups meet twice weekly. Training is provided.
  • Activity helper: Lincoln Park Community Senior Center seeks friendly and outgoing volunteers to assist the coordinator in providing activities for guests. Responsibilities include distribution of food items for Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors, scheduling appointments, making popcorn and coffee, light cleaning, and creating a warm and welcoming environment. Volunteers must have good people and phone skills.
  • St. Scholastica Monastery: Volunteers are needed to work in a variety of different positions such as the gift shop, front desk and driving. Volunteers must have good people skills.

COMMEMORATIVE AIR FORCE The Lake Superior Squadron 101 of the Commemorative Air Force seeks volunteers to help at the Armed Forces Museum. The Squadron is located in Hangar 101 of the old Duluth Air Base at 4931 Airport Road in Hermantown.

Volunteers can be anyone with prior military service who are looking for an opportunity to volunteer, retired airline airframe and powerplant mechanics or retired U.S. Air Force or other military aviation maintenance technicians, those interested in preserving history and anyone interested in helping to restore a World War II Consolidated PBY Catalina.

Jamey Malcomb

Jamey Malcomb started as a reporter for the Lake County News-Chronicle in August 2015. Malcomb is a native of North Carolina and holds a bachelor's degree in English and history from the George Washington University and a master's degree in education from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. Malcomb moved to Minnesota in July 2012 and previously worked as a sports clerk and news assistant at the Duluth News Tribune. He is the beat writer for the Lake County Board of Commissioners, Silver Bay City Council and high school sports in Lake County.
