Superior Middle School employee wins national recognition

Submitted by Samantha Farley C.J. public relations intern The national nonprofit School Nutrition Association awarded Amanda Meteraud from Superior Middle School the regional Heart of the Program Award, which recognizes the valuable contribution of school nutrition employees who prepare and serve healthy, delicious meals to students.

Willing to do whatever is asked of her, Meteraud always goes above and beyond to help her students. Her dedication and commitment helped grow the school’s supper program from 20 participants to 200. At the helm, Meteraud ensured the program was meeting the needs of the school community. She contacted coaches and after-school coordinators to determine the best serving time, and created healthy menus based on student feedback. She also successfully promoted the initiative through creative flyers distributed throughout the school and neighborhoods. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch or supper, Meteraud greets every student with a smile as they come through her line.

“Passionate school nutrition professionals are at the forefront of student wellness, preparing nutritious meals each school day and inspiring students to try healthy, new foods,” said Leah Schmidt, president of the School Nutrition Association. “Amanda’s enthusiasm transpires throughout the cafeteria, creating a warm and welcoming environment for all students and staff.”

The regional Heart of the Program Award was created to recognize outstanding school nutrition employees who exhibit an extraordinary commitment to the school meal program and the students they serve. These people influence the quality of school meals through customer service, an interest in young people, cooperation, work attendance, creativity, participation in professional growth and training and their willingness to “Go the Extra Mile.”

In July, Meteraud was honored during the awards ceremony at School Nutrition Association’s annual national conference in Boston.
