Best Bets: Newest poet laureate gives inaugural reading

Duluth’s newest poet laureate will give her inaugural reading — the first of the required five public events — this weekend at Peace United Church of Christ. The event will include a crowning ceremony.

Ellie Schoenfeld, who co-founded Poetry Harbor, served on the Spirit Lake Poetry Series and has facilitated a monthly writing group at the Federal Prison Camp in addition to a writing workshop for an HIV positive support group, has been published in anthologies and journals in addition to her own collections.

Sara Thomsen will perform during the reading.

Schoenfeld is Duluth’s fifth poet laureate (Jim Johnson held the title twice) and will hold the title for a two-year term. She was selected by the 12-person committee that oversees the work of the Duluth Poet Laureate Project.

Schoenfeld’s inaugural reading is 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Peace United Church of Christ, 1111 N. 11th Ave. E. Free, open to the public.
