Best Bets: Norwegian ragtime pianist to perform at UMD

An internationally known ragtime and jazz pianist who is, incidentally, from Norway, will perform Saturday at Weber Music Hall.

Morten Gunnar Larsen leads the Ophelia Orchestra, works with the Odean Jazz Quintet and tours internationally. He’s had a hand in 40 recordings, including his own “Fingerbreaker: Classics of Ragtime and Early Jazz Piano.” His most recent recording, “Sorgenfri,” is a live concert recording from Denmark and his ninth solo album. Offbeat magazine said of it: “Huge technique, imagination, a ferocious appetite for improvisation, tasteful embellishment when called for. Larsen has it all.”

UMD Music presents Morten Gunnar Larsen at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Weber Music Hall at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Tickets: $16 for adults, $11 for seniors, $9 for UMD faculty/staff, $8 for students, $6 for UMD students at or (218) 726-8877.
