Best Bets: ‘The One Who Watches’ (again)

“The One Who Watches” gets another screening Tuesday at Zinema 2. Photo courtesy of Nicholas Sunsdahl.

“The One Who Watches” is a sort of Lynch-ian look at life in a northern town, as seen from the perspective of a newbie.

Dr. Jesse is a new professor at the local college and in his wanderings within the woods and back, he stumbles upon a bunch of townies trying out for a community theater musical.

Of course, Dr. Jesse effortlessly lands the lead role — summoned by the mysterious director Jean, who is rumored to be Canadian.

This short feature film, made by Nicholas Sunsdahl and Molly Josefson, sold out its first screening. This re-run is part of Zinema 2’s Explorers Club series. They’ve billed it as a sort of “Twin Peaks” meets “White Christmas.”

There are lots of local faces and places in this movie that stars Jesse Whiting and Sean Elmquist and has scenes set at the Masonic Temple theater and at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

If you can’t make the movie, it’s also available for streaming or download at nicholassunsdahl.com. It also plays at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Trylon microcinema in Minneapolis.
