Best Bets: One-man show ‘Jeffrey Hatcher’s Hamlet’ at UMD
When the playwright Jeffrey Hatcher was 11, he staged a production of “Hamlet” starring his hometown Steubenville, Ohio, classmates.
It played to a full house, so they added a show. That one sold out, too.
Jeffrey Hatcher stars as Jeffrey Hatcher in “Jeffrey Hatcher’s Hamlet,” a one-man show that revisits the experience of producing the show with his fifth-grade class.
“Jeffrey Hatcher’s Hamlet” premiered this past summer as part of the Minneapolis-based Illusion Theater’s Fresh Ink Series. Hatcher is now touring the show to 11 stops in Minnesota, including Monday’s performance at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Earlier this school year, UMD produced Hatcher’s play “Compleat Female Stage Beauty,” the story of the transition in theater when women were allowed to appear in plays —thus earning the roles of female characters previously held by men like the 17th century actor Edward Kynaston.
