When Rapala fishing tackle mogul Ron Weber donated $100,000 to the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Natural Resources Research Institute, he made officials promise it wouldn’t go to more high-flung research on all the problems facing North Shore streams.
At first, Duluth’s Tom Pfister thought maybe the fish on the other end of his line was a salmon because it made such a powerful run. He has caught some nice Lake Superior salmon, and he knows what it feels like.
We had thought it was a lake trout trip, but the first walleye changed our mind. Hey, we could be flexible. Lake trout? Walleyes? Who’s going to be picky on a balmy February afternoon in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness?
