Javier Herdocia and Danilo Cisneros of Nicaragua tried skiing not long after they arrived at Telemark Resort in December for an international work program. On Saturday, they will become the first Nicaraguans to race in the 23-kilometer Kortelopet as part of the 36th American Birkebeiner cross-country ski marathon.
Javier Herdocia of Nicaragua didn’t know where in the U.S. he would wind up participating in an international work program, but he hoped his American adventure would take him to the bright lights of New York City.
Instead, he ended up going to Northwestern Wisconsin, which may have seemed like the middle of nowhere, but if Herdocia was disappointed, it didn’t last long.
The 36th American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race will be run in its entirety Saturday with a finish on Main Street in Hayward, race officials announced Tuesday.
