Deep cuts in state shared revenue never materialized when Wisconsin’s governor delivered a budget address that promises to spread the pain of a projected $5.7 billion budget shortfall in the next biennium.
Pawlenty’s budget plan calls for $33.6 billion in spending, down 2 percent from the state’s existing $34.4 billion budget. The announcement is the start of substantive budget discussions at the Capitol.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty on Friday drained the state’s budget reserve and chopped away at state payments to local governments, colleges, human services providers and state agencies in balancing the budget.
Tuition at the University of Minnesota will jump about 4.5 percent in 2010 and again in 2011 if a $141.2 million budget request approved by the U’s Board of Regents is granted by the state.
