The state’s grant-in-aid snowmobile trails closed for the season Wednesday. Riding these trails without the landowner’s permission is trespassing. And the state no longer is grooming snowmobile trails this season.
Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire had never ridden a snowmobile until a few years ago. Now he owns a couple of them. He and his wife ride them in the Black Woods Blizzard Tour, a 375-mile snowmobile ride to raise money to fight ALS.
The 27-year-old was in the middle of a group of five snowmobilers in Voyageurs National park who had left a resort tavern on Kabetogama and were headed to Black Bay on Rainy Lake. The park's chief ranger said excessive speed, darkness and alcohol are suspected of being involved in the crash.
We are here in part to celebrate the return of a true winter in northern Minnesota, where snow came early and often and snowmobilers have been in heaven. Some come north with their own snowmobiles, and others come to rent machines in Beaver Bay.
