The beleaguered state agency providing an online method of buying health insurance responded to complaints that a Monday deadline is too soon given computer glitches and an overwhelmed call center, and delayed the final day to sign up to Dec. 31.
They know the upcoming session of the Minnesota Legislature will be a short one — in and out — and dominated by a bonding bill, an every-other-year doling out of cash for public projects such as arenas and college buildings. They know, too, that any time lawmakers still have left after that will be eaten up by a proposal to raise the minimum wage, a bill to strengthen the state’s synthetic drug laws, and other priority items.
UPDATE: Mark Dayton said today that he and his staff have been in regular contact with MNsure officials, and even more often as deadlines approached and computer glitches, problems with a help line and other issues built up.
Rural Minnesota is in trouble. Young people are fleeing the farms and forests of the Gopher State, and the residents left there are aging. And they’re dying. While populations decline in the outstate, the Twin Cities area, especially the suburbs, booms.
