Minnesotans have long been prominent in helping to frame the national debate. Though they departed the race well before it approached the wire, Minnesota’s 6th District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and former Gov. Tim Pawlenty continued that tradition in the current presidential election cycle, and they’re to be commended for it.
When a member of the U.S. military is killed in the line of duty in a combat zone, the president sends a condolence letter to his or her family. But such letters were never sent to families of military personnel who committed suicide in combat zones. Until this week.

Finding a way to make up a $6 billion state deficit is almost certainly going to mean some pain at the local level, and while most of us will have little influence over what the Legislature does, there is plenty of room — and need — for involvement in the resulting local decisions.
