Snow was piled so high in Iowa that drivers couldn’t see across intersections and a North Dakota snowblower repair shop was overwhelmed with business as heavy snow and wind chills as low as 52 below zero blasted much of the Midwest today.
Audacious Midwestern winemakers are trying to secure federal recognition for a viticultural area sprawling over four states and 29,000 square miles in the Upper Mississippi River Valley. If it’s approved, it would be the largest designated winemaking region in the country.
The recession will worsen and unemployment rates will likely soar in nine Midwest and Plains states -- including Minnesota -- over the next few months, but a new survey of business leaders suggests the region may fare better than the nation as a whole.
