Following the deaths of two Northland men, State Rep. Tom Huntley and State Sen. Roger Reinert say they want to hold hearings this fall to determine if more restrictions are needed on how methadone treatment is administered in Minnesota.
The 26-year-old Cloquet woman charged Wednesday in connection with a crash that killed two Carlton County Highway Department workers was on her way back from a regular visit to a methadone clinic in Brainerd, authorities said.

UPDATE: The 26-year-old Cloquet woman charged today in connection with a crash that killed two Carlton County Highway Department workers was on her way back from a regular visit to a methadone clinic in Brainerd, according to authorities.
As the Lake Superior Treatment Center faces the revocation of its state license, St. Louis County wants to see if anyone else is interested in running a methadone clinic for drug addicts in the Duluth area.
In 2010, Josh Bergstedt became one of thousands of people who have dropped out of Minnesota's methadone programs without completing the treatment. From 2007 to 2011, 94 percent of the state’s methadone patients who left the programs did so without completing the treatment.
DNT INVESTIGATION: About half the patients admitted to the state’s methadone clinics had their treatment paid for through publicly subsided insurance programs such as Minnesota Care or Medicaid, records show.
Methadone, a drug available since the 1960s and deemed by the National Institute of Health and the Centers for Disease Control as “the most effective treatment for opiate addiction,” is in essence a risk-versus-reward system.
