The district was seeking a $33 million bond referendum in support of the construction of a new school for students in Early Childhood through 12th grade. It was the third referendum the district has sought in the last nine years — and the third to be defeated.
Chris Edquist knew as soon as he looked at the color of the St. Louis River on Saturday morning that fishing would be tough. The river, full of spring runoff and the silt left from last summer’s flooding, was running the color of root beer laced with red clay.
For some people in Northeastern Minnesota, last summer’s flood isn’t a distant memory. It’s something they live with every day, as they continue to struggle to get their homes and their lives back to a pre-flood state.
Damage from last year’s historic flooding in the Northland will probably mean an increase in electric bills for Minnesota Power customers to cover $35 million to $44 million in repairs at its dam in Thomson.
Darrin Severance kept a close eye on his depth-finder as he eased his big Ranger through the channel of the St. Louis River. He was navigating a shallow stretch at the upstream end of Spirit Lake. The sonar device told him he had just 2.3 feet of water beneath his boat.
UPDATE: The National Weather Service this morning issued a winter storm warning for all of Northwestern Wisconsin and a winter weather advisory for much of Northeastern Minnesota, including Duluth, where 3 to 6 inches of snow is expected tonight.
As winter loosens its grasp on the St. Louis River, recreational boaters and anglers will face a new problem. Namely, how to navigate a river channel changed by last summer’s flooding without the aid of navigational buoys upriver from Spirit Lake.
The omnibus Jobs and Economic Development bill under conference with members of the Minnesota House and Senate is causing some concern for Northland officials worried about a section that would pull $7 million in unspent flood aid and add it to the state’s general fund.
