St. Norbert received five goals from five different players to defeat St. Scholastica 5-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association’s Harris Cup Championship Saturday night before 1,365 fans at the Cornerstone Center in De Pere, Wis.
Despite being on-ice rivals, St. Scholastica and St. Norbert College share a common bond.
The two universities became nomads once five Wisconsin schools broke away from the seven-team Northern Collegiate Hockey Association to form their own league for the 2013-14 season. And when the chance came to merge with the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association, the pair went in as a package deal.
So perhaps it’s fitting that the Saints and the Green Knights will decide the first reorganized NCHA championship. The teams meet for the Harris Cup at 7 p.m. today at Cornerstone Community Center in DePere, Wis.
I live in a neighborhood with many houses being rented by students attending the University of Minnesota Duluth and College of St. Scholastica. It has been my observation that these colleges could do a great service for students, something to help them begin their college life on their own, away from their doting parents who obviously supplied them with sheltered parking and/or snow removal all the while they were growing up.
