Herb Bergson, the former Duluth and Superior mayor who famously vowed in 2005 that he would never drink again after crashing his car into a bridge while intoxicated, is serving a 22-day jail sentence in southern Wisconsin after a second drunken-driving conviction.
Efforts at settling the Hermantown teachers strike, which enters its second week tomorrow, apparently failed yesterday. The dispute will now go to arbitration, and a spokesman for the Hermantown School Board said the board will accept the results of the arbitration.
I learned about the confirmation of the emerald ash borer in Superior while attending a meeting of tree-care professionals on the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus (“Northland’s first emerald ash borer discovered in Superior,” Aug. 16).
Calling it a “sickening” process, Superior Parks and Recreation Administrator Mary Morgan said city crews have begun cutting down live ash trees in the North End after emerald ash borers were found there last week.
