Birkie week: Nicaraguan students dive into skiing, enter Kortelopet
Javier Herdocia and Danilo Cisneros of Nicaragua tried skiing not long after they arrived at Telemark Resort in December for an international work program. On Saturday, they will become the first Nicaraguans to race in the 23-kilometer Kortelopet as part of the 36th American Birkebeiner cross-country ski marathon.

North America’s largest cross-country ski race will run Saturday from Cable to Hayward. The forecast calls for temperatures in the high teens, and officials said Birkie this year will ski a full race, culminating on Main Street in Hayward.
