The Two Harbors Kayak Festival returns to Two Harbors today through Sunday for the 13th year in a row. This year, the event has added new kayak tours and an emphasis on the growing sport of stand-up paddle-boarding.
The attached photo was taken just about one year ago — July 20, 2009, to be exact. It shows the St. Clair (left) and Edward L. Ryerson laid up at the Fraser Shipyards in Superior during the middle of the shipping season.
The Mesabi Miner is one of four expected arrivals in the Twin Ports today, coming in this morning to load coal. The self-unloading bulk carrier was launched Feb. 14, 1977, and was the fourth of 13 1,000-footers built for various American flag carriers on the Great Lakes. It’s shown here leaving the Duluth piers in December.
