Several music stars appeared in front of a sellout crowd Monday at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, to cap a series of events dubbed "50 Winters Later." Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "the Big Bopper" Richardson played the Surf the night before their plane crashed 50 years ago.
Fifty years ago this week, on Jan. 31, 1959, the Winter Dance Party tour played a show at the Duluth Armory. The Day the Music Died was 48 hours away for show headliners Buddy Holly, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson and Ritchie Valens.
