WASHINGTON — House committee chairman Rep. Jim Oberstar said Tuesday that he wants Congress to enact a mileage-based tax on cars and trucks to pay for highway programs now rather than wait years to test the idea.
Beginning April 1, the federal government won’t grab as many dollars as it normally does from your paycheck. As part of the stimulus package, the “Making Work Pay” tax credit will amount to $400 for single filers and $800 for married couples in 2009 and 2010.
