Silencing the Desperate, from Two Harbors High School, plays at the Battle of the Bands at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center on Sunday afternoon. Crescent Moon, representing Superior High School, won the competition. Crescent Moon receives a multi-day professional recording session and local radio air play. Aphamy, from Ashland High School, placed second, and East High School’s Excuse Me Princess placed third.
Board member Ann Wasson made the motion to accept a student transition team’s first choice: for Denfeld and East names, colors and mascots to remain the same, while Central’s name and mascot are retired.
East High School has fewer low-income students and students of color than Central and Denfeld. When Central closes, the new eastern high school will receive a relative influx of diversity in the form of students from the central corridor.
A vote is expected to take place on the option sometime in December. If approved, Denfeld would close next year and reopen for the 2011-2012 school year when construction is complete and Central High School closes permanently.
