The old-timers say the lake trout bite best when the aspen leaves are the size of a beaver’s ear. And in this crazy late spring, that should be soon — assuming the ice is out. There are lots of good lake trout lakes off the Gunflint Trail, and Snowbank Lake near Ely has lake trout as well. Catch them by trolling flashy spoons or crankbaits.

Field reports: Hermantown native’s brook trout memories published 
Some Duluth residents might remember Harry Peterson, who grew up in Hermantown about 60 years ago. Peterson, who now lives in Middleton, Wis., wrote a story about brook trout fishing that appears in the Spring 2013 issue of the American Fly Fisher journal. The story, titled “A Boy’s Trout Stream,” describes Peterson’s memories of fishing Miller Creek as a young boy with his friend Gordy Engberg.
