Local view: ‘Self-made’ individuals owe their good fortune to many
“Self-made.” We’ve heard it claimed, without reservation — and arrogantly, in my opinion — from individuals with large egos. Men, usually, make the brag. They point our how they, all on their own, are responsible for their substantial financial or professional success.

In response: Obama’s ACA plan a meaningful first step to improving health care

A judge's view: Schools, courts can’t solve truancy problem without parents
Yesterday I had my regular child-protection calendar. Of the 16 scheduled cases, seven were based on truancy petitions. How can more than a third of a particular docket be truancy cases? It may start with a middle school student skipping a class and then another class and another class. Soon, it’s easier to not go to school or not attend a class and “run the halls.”

Local view: Funding youth intervention is fiscally responsible
As director of the Truancy Action Project and Student Attendance Review Board for Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, I know how crucial youth intervention services are. The project, review board and Lutheran Social Service provide a continuum of prevention and early intervention services with the goal of improving attendance and keeping kids in school. By working cooperatively with students, families, schools, the courts and other community agencies, we are able to identify barriers to regular school attendance, remove these barriers and help students improve attendance.
