Windjammers Big Band helps Saint Ann’s residents get a jump on New Year’s Eve festivities
The Windjammers is a group of local musicians with a strong sense of camaraderie.
“There was a bunch of us who just got together and I had some music. We just got together and started playing and we just continued,” said Marie Garofalo, an alto- and tenor saxophone player with the group.
Founded in the late 1980s by Ruth Dodge, Eileen Kochevar and Bob Gelbmann, the ensemble frequently visits senior citizen residences around the Twin Ports performing big band music of the 30s and 40s.

Historic inventory of Duluth's Endion neighborhood begins

Everything you wanted to know: the Budgeteer interviews Santa Claus at Duluth's Miller Hill Mall
Editor’s note: The Budgeteer made special arrangements for freelance reporter Beth Koralia to interview Santa Claus at the Miller Hill Mall this past Wednesday. Koralia says, “As I drove my car on Joshua Avenue on my way to Miller Hill Mall, I rehearsed in my mind all the questions I’ve been dying to ask Santa since I was a child. By the time I crossed Miller Trunk Highway my heart began to beat a little more quickly. I found a parking spot and I walked into the door near Barnes and Noble. I saw Santa waiting especially for me. He was standing near his special chair in the open area near the Old Navy store. I waved at him and he waved back.
Santa Claus couldn't have been nicer to take time from his busy schedule to discuss reindeer, elves, and presents. He was every bit as jolly as I had imagined, just as if he had stepped right out of Clement C. Moore's poem.”
Beth was surprised that he had what sounded like a thick Minnesotan accent, suggesting the North Pole is closer to Duluth than previously thought. Or that Santa visits Minnesota regularly.

Holy Family Church's 'Cosmic family’ tells the story in Duluth's Lincoln Park
Since 1997, the only way many people would know that a big light-colored brick building in Lincoln Park on West Third Street was a church was by reading the sign. It was a nondescript building to the casual passerby. There was no bell tower, steeple or cross.
“The only indication we had that we were a Catholic or Christian church was the sign out there. Other than that, we could be anything,” said Terry Figel, pastor of the parish.

Taking the right steps to improve parking 
The City of Duluth took a tremendous step forward this week when the city council voted to create a new parking commission.
It was more than a year ago that the Greater Downtown Council and City of Duluth teamed up to bring a panel of nationally recognized parking experts to our community. This panel was asked to examine and assess current parking issues downtown, discuss the best practices, identify opportunities and develop recommendations to enhance the downtown parking experience.
