A Northland winter sports institution will reach a milestone this weekend.
The 30th annual Pepsi Challenge cross-country ski race will be held Saturday at Giants Ridge near Biwabik. Starting as a town-to-town ski jaunt three decades ago, and now a collection of several races held at Giants Ridge, the event has endured — with several hundred participants expected this year.
There isn’t a tried-and-true formula for creating the perfect ice cross downhill athlete, but Reed Whiting says someone experienced in freestyle skiing, ski racing and inline skating can conquer the speeds, sharp turns and jumps associated with the high-octane sport.

The Chester Bowl Improvement Club announced Sunday that it has hired Dave Schaeffer as its new executive director, to replace park fixture Thom Storm, who has worked at Chester Bowl for nearly 40 years and will be retiring next year.
In a long winter, you can get a little stale skiing or snowmobiling the same trails all the time. Maybe it’s time to break out. Head up the North Shore, or to Ely, Voyageurs National Park or the Gunflint Trail. Try some new tracks. Shake off the same old paths and see some new country.
